As the game of Metazoo continues to evolve over time, I believe that cards like New Year's New Beginnings (NYNB) will continue to be a staple in spellbooks. As we discussed in last week's blog with Growth, the ability to draw cards is very important to improve consistency with how your spellbook plays. In casual and competitive play, NYNB is used frequently as an offensive and defensive tool. Here are a few scenarios on how this card gets utilized play:

  • Opening hand:
    • When you initially draw your first 7 cards, maybe these aren't the most optimal cards to start a game. This could all change with a NYNB in your opening hand. Assuming you have at least one aura to contract NYNB, you could play this card on opening hand to redraw a new 7 cards which forces your opponent to do so as well. When your opponent elects to keep an opening hand, it's a safe assumption that they have something good to start. You might force them to discard important resources like aura, artifacts, spells and/or potions that are needed to win. Reducing an opponent's aura generating resources will more than likely improve your winning condition scenarios!
  • Middle game:
    • As a game progresses you will need additional drawing power to help with arena strategies to set up winning conditions. You could contract this card mid game to create additional draw power, which could help you find additional aura, potions, spells and/or beasties that are needed to help win the game. The only disadvantage of playing this later in the game is the ability for this spell to be countered, so you have to watch out for cards like 2nd Anniversary, Dampen and others that will negate the effect of this spell. Be mindful of how much aura your opponent is leaving up unfatigued in the arena as this could be a sign that they are playing a defensive strategy against you. If all of your opponent's aura are fatigued, cast away and change the game! One other important consideration to remember when using this card is that your opponent can also benefit from it too. In a scenario when you and your opponent have minimal cards in your chapters, your opponent could be waiting for that 1 or 2 cards needed to setup their own winning condition.

That's going to do it for this week's CGC Trading Card Spotlight of the week. Stay tuned for more weekly highlights in the future!
